Home KAKADU
After I left Darwin I spent some time in Kakadu National park. My first activity occurred before the actual park but was still part of the Kakadu experience. This was a jumping croc tour on the Adelaide river.
The river is tidal, very dirty and has a lot of debris floating in it. The crew of the boat also fed some kites on the way back.
The next stop Ubirr where there was an extensive collection of Aboriginal Rock Art.
The highlight of this part of the trip was yet to come. After a climb to the top of an escarpment, not knowing what I was looking for, I came to a magnificent panorama in front of me.
The photos don't do it justice. There were high escarpments to the east in Arnhem Land and a plain and wetlands to the north and west. Absolutely beautiful!
I passed through Jabiru (where there is a uranium mine just to the east) on the way to Cooinda and the yellow water cruise. I stayed the night here and next morning went on the cruise. This is on the Alligator River and the wild life is just fantastic.
These are a bit hard to identify but are of a crocodile, a Jabiru and 2 adult and a juvenile Brolga.
There are many species of birdlife that allow the boat to come within a couple of metres and plenty of crocodiles including one we saw catch a catfish. An excellent tour.
The whole Kakadu experiencewas well worthwhile. Its a shame that the various locations are so far apart and that much of it requires 4WD. What it would be like in the wet I can only imagine.
