Home UPDATE 12 AUGUST
Typical!! the weather continues to march to the beat of its own drum. At 8.00am it started raining. I left home at 8.10 to get to the centre of Adelaide for my formal farewell by the Lord Mayor. There were lots of people there to say goodbye. Work colleagues, friends, relatives and fellow clubbie drivers. (Only one in their clubbie though because of the weather. The Lord Mayor did a great job of flagging me off and I'd like to say thanks to him for his enthusiasm and to my CEO for hosting him.
Of course the rain stopped about 20 minutes after I departed. My first port of call was a friends place to modify the trailer mudguards that were rubbing on the tyres. A quick hacksaw job fixed that and I was soon away.
About 100 km outside of Adelaide is the now defunct settlement of Ninnes. This was named after an ancestor of mine who found a new trade route from Clare to the the mining areas of Moonta and Wallaroo. I stopped at the memorial cairn and took some photos.
It was then on into Wallaroo to see some friends. They organised an interview and some photos with the Yorke Peninsular Newspaper at Kadina. I spent the first night at Port Augusta . Next morning on the way to Whyalla I went past the Baxter Immigration Detention centre.
I had a look around Whyalla where I ran across another Clubbie driver who races at Mallala.
I then called in at some of the small coastal villages on the way to Port Lincoln where I intended to spend a couple of days. The first day I checked out some of the local sights and met a couple from Tasmania who were touring the area and when they found out that I would be in Tasmania in November insisted that I stay with them at their home. You meet some nice people on the road!
The next day the brother of a work colleague organised for me to go out on a Tuna boat to harvest fish from a cage. The cages are about 15 km offshore and each are about 40 metres across and 18 metres deep. The logistics and coordination of the exercise were impressive and the crew cleared the cage of 1680 fish in the day. It was a big day. Up at 5.30am and back on the wharf at 5.30pm.
Travelled to Coffin Bay today where I've set up in the caravan park and done some sight seeing around the area. I discovered an internet cafe and thought I'd be able to publish this update only to discover that the system was only dial up. Not happy telstra!! I'm afraid you'll have to wait.
