Home UPDATE 12 SEPTEMBER
I've booked into the Caravan Park at Cable Beach and it is certainly very nice compared to some I've been in. I tried doing an oil change but the sump is too low to get the drain pan under and I couldn't get any purchase on the sump plug to undo it anyway. so after losing lots of skin from the knuckles and many unsavory thoughts I visited a local garage and organised some time on their four poster hoist for the next day. Its the only way to go. All home workshops should have one! the car is now thoroughly lubricated and 100% inspected underneath. I must say I'm impressed by the way its (the car) put together.
Checked into a telecentre where I could connect my laptop to edit the website. I discovered that I had exceeded the bandwidth again and things had come to a halt. My photos are all taking up too much space on the site. After a bit of a search I obtained a resizer program from one of the staff of the telecentre and have reduced the size of all my photos to about one 10th of what they were previously. When I get to Kununurra in a couple of days I will try and replace all the photos in the updates with the reduced size ones. Stand by for chaos and confusion.
I went for a walk on cable Beach and it is very nice with nice clear white sand. I stood out a bit because of a lack of suntan. Haven't had much chance to lie around in the sun for a while. I also visited the Port area and explored the shops in the Chinatown area.
All in all a nice restful break. On the last night I took a few photos of a sunset over cable Beach.
On the way to Derby I saw my first Boab tree. these look quite spectacular with their fat bodies and frizzy hairdos. just out of Derby is the prison Boab tree where prisoners were held in the late 1880's
Nearby is the worlds largest stock trough. It is capable of watering 500 head of cattle at the same time.
On the way to Fitzroy Crossing I saw and spoke to a guy, Colin, from Hahndorf in the Adelaide hills. he was walking around Australia pushing a cart/trolley raising funds for cancer research. After I left him I cursed myself for not taking a photo! At Fitzroy Crossing I stopped at the information centre and was inundated with kids who climbed all over the car.
Booked into a nice Caravan Park, Fitzroy River lodge, a real oasis in the bush. i had my best nights sleep for a while. The road from Fitzroy Crossing to Halls creek was as good as any stretch so far on the trip. The car also attracted a heap of kids from goodness knows where when i stopped at Halls creek.
