Home UPDATE 8 SEPTEMBER
I'm in Broome at the moment and have just arrived so comments on Broome will have to wait for the next installment. Leaving Carnarvon just to the north is the Gascoyne River. This can truly lay claim to the title of flowing upside down. The water is actually under the surface in aquifers and the town draws its water from these.
About 75 km north I visited the Quobba blowholes. These were quite spectacular and the coast around this area was fairly dangerous.
On the way back I caught a swarm of grasshoppers. About 2 hours later having cleaned out the radiator and cleaning the car I bought some wire fly mesh and cut a few pieces to fit the grille aperture. This has worked perfectly and has not made any difference to the operating temperature of the engine.
The next stop was coral Bay that is on the Ningaloo Reef. I hired some snorkeling gear and spent an hour or more exploring the reef and the marine life. The fish life was quite colourful and varied. After a night at Coral bay I went on to Exmouth. On the way I passed RAAF Base Learmonth. This would really qualify as a remote area posting! Exmouth is a fairly large town and even has a canal development under construction. I spent the next night at Onslow that is about the last of the "Sea Change" type coastal towns. On the way here the petrol price at Nanutarra Roadhouse was 161.9 cents per litre! From here on its long drives to major towns. (500 - 600 kms) On the leg to Port Hedland with a bit of a tail wind I got 6.53 L/100km that is the equivalent of about 42mpg in the old money. Pretty good! had a noisy night at port Hedland with road trains going past through the night. Another big drive to Roebuck Roadhouse and then into Broome this morning.
I have tried taking a few photos from the car while driving. They haven't turned out too well though as Its more a case of guessing what you're aiming at. Here's an example!
Near Learmonth is a memorial to the crew of the Krait and Z Force. This is at the spot where they left for Singapore in 1943. (If you don't know what I'm talking about check your WW2 Aust Military history!!
On one of the long stretches a Hawk swooped down in front of the car and grabbed a small (15 cm ) lizard from on the road. It was close enough that I could see the lizard in its claws as it moved off to the side.
